Jul 27, 2009 Rachel L. Webb

Gibraltar on the south coast of Spain offers a tremendous range of activities, apes, dolphins, windsurfing, shopping, WWl tunnels, great beaches and incredible views.

Gibraltar is connected to Spain but has remained British territory since 1704, which means that a passport is needed to come here.

Gibraltar is an enormous protrusion of Jurassic limestone from which are the most incredible views across the sea to Africa. The rock reaches 412m (almost 1400 feet) above sea level, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a climb, take the six minute cable car ride up to the viewpoint.

Gibraltar has five excellent beaches Eastern Beach, Catalan Bay and Sandy Bay which have soft sand and Little Bay and Camp Bay on the western side are rocky beaches. Water sports are popular around these waters where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. There are a number of sailing schools and scuba diving courses and with a wealth of shipwrecks around the rock it attracts divers from around the world. Windsurfing and fishing are also highly present and popular here.

For such a small area, it is 8km2 here are a large number of attractions to visit from in Gibraltar apart from the trip to the Upper Rock a visit to St Michael’s Cave should not be missed either nor of course should Europe’s only colony of semi-wild apes, but hang on to handbags and hats around them.

A Gibraltar holiday can be a laid-back beach affair or packed with local visits, here are some of the attractions on offer:

St Michael’s WWll Cave

The cave was can be seen mentioned in the travel writings of the Roman Pomponius Melia in 45 CE and has a tremendous history throughout WWll. The cave is within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, a ticket is needed to enter that and will give you access to the caves.

Great Siege Tunnels

During the Great Siege of 1779 – 1783 these tunnels were dug using black powder charge, hammers, chisels and shovels – an extraordinary feat. Canons, army paraphernalia and ration boxes are on display. This attraction is also within the Nature Reserve.

Whale & Dolphin Watching Boat Trips

With three different species of dolphin found in the Bay of Gibraltar try a Dolphin World boat trip, a 90 minute cruise to watch dolphins in the natural habitat playing and swimming alongside the boat. For another boat tirp take a ferry to Morocco across the Gibraltar Strait for perfect and exotic day trip to complete any holiday.

Gibraltar has a temperate climate with a daily average of 30°C in August and 15°C in December. For more information visit Gibraltar Info
