Spain: Sweet Wine Show in Jerez de la Frontera, Cadiz

The home of Spanish Sherry plays host to an International gatherings of sweet wine producers. Jerex de la Frontera is the venue for the only exhibition for sweet wines.

Spain plays host again this year to over 100 countries, the attendance is growing every with every exhibition, and this year Vinoble welcomes Mexico, Turkey and Jordan for the first time.

The Vinoble exhibition is to be held in Jerez, the corner of Spain famousfor its sweet wines and sherry’s. This year will see the sixth show and it is to be held again in the Arab Alcazar in Jerez, which includes the Renaissance Palace Villavicencio. The exhibition uses the palace’s rooms and grounds and has expanded every year so far to include more tasting and exhibitions tents.

The International Noble Wines Exhibition is the only show dedicated to fortified, natural sweet wines and dessert wines. It takes place every two years in the Andalusian town that shares its name –Sherry is the English pronounciation of Jerez.

Sherry was the first wine to be exported from Spain in the fifteenth century and most of it went to England where the demand for sweet sherries was great.

Two of the most famous cellars or bodegas in Jerez are

Sherry with its D.O can only be made in one particular growing area that has the right soil and weather conditions – this is the only wet part of Andalucia. There are more than 10,000 hectares of vineyards in this Sherry growing area of Jerez. To become a Sherry the grapes must be grown between Jerez de la Frontera, Sanlúcar de Barrameda and Puerto de Santa María.

Some of the Mediterranean countries that attend the exhibition have some simply sweet fine wines, they include

Spain - finos, manzanillas, olorosos amontillados, creams, pedro ximénez, pale creams, and muscatels; the finos, amontillados, olorosos and Pedro Ximénez from Montilla-Moriles (Cordoba); sweet wines from Catalonia; fortified wines from the County of Huelva; muscatels from Valencia, Malaga and Navarra; fondillones from Alicante; malmsey from the Canaries; sweet wines from Yecla and Jumilla; late vintages from Rueda and Rias Baixas....

Portugal - vintage ports, muscatels from Setúbal and sweet wines from Madeira.

Greece - Samos, Santorini, Patras, Macedonia and Crete.

France - Sauternes, Barsac, Alsace, Languedoc-Roussillon, Loire, Mombazillac, Pacherenc, Gaillac, Jurançon, Sainte Croix du Mont, Loupiac and Bergerac.
