For an winter sunshine break, with warm seas and lots of sunshine try the Mar Menor area of Murcia - the warmest place in Europe.

RIght down in the south-east corner of Spain, Murcia sits with sea, sand, sun and golf galore but they aren't its main claim to fame. For Murcia and in particular the area around Europe’s largest salt water lake has been an attraction for centuries.

People flock every summer to this natural salt water lagoon as an aid for rheumatism and arthritis and also to coat their body with the mineral rich sands around the edge of the lagoon. Still today you can see people coated in sand and basking in salty water to bring relief and refreshment to their ailing bodies.

These natural mineral mud baths are now mimicked across the world as innovative Spa and beauty treatments, here it’s always been free although perhaps a little bit more public!

The salt water lake of the Mar Menor is also a popular area to practice many different water sports because the high salt content aids buoyancy – making it a great place for beginners to learn canoeing through to jet-skiing and windsurfing.

This vast expanse of shallow salty water owing to its shallowness, buoyancy and lack of tide is an ideal spot for young children.

For the grown-ups it’s a great location for golf courses and with a climate of more than 300 days of sunshine a year. It’s also the home of the Jack Nicklaus Golf Trail, a circuit of courses which will offer nine 18-hole courses, in a 25 kilometer area, by Jack Nicklaus Design. Three of the courses are now open for play at the Polaris World complexes of La Torre, El Valle, and Riquelme at Mar Menor Golf Resort 9-holes are open for play, a further 9 holes are under construction, along with other five courses.

Jack Nicklaus, considered to be the greatest player of the century has now also become a successful designer of golf courses. The Jack Nicklaus golf trail in Murcia is unique in concept and in together with The 5* Intercontinental Hotel Mar Menor Golf Resort & Spa it offers a great something-for-everyone family experience.

If you’re hoping to sample a famous paella while on holiday here then try the new Restaurant Limonero – Arroceria in the La Torre Golf Resort. The Limonero (lemon tree) has gone back to basics and cooks paella over olive wood and vine fires as they would have traditionally been cooked in the open countryside.

This lower cooking heat brings out the flavours of the dish and you can follow your seafood, rabbit and snail or pork and vegetable paella being prepared and cooked to order.

Murcia has lots to offer, sea, sand, sun, spas and golf what more could you imagine.
