Explore the history and art of wine making at the soon-to-be opened museum in France. The local Mayor Alain Juppé will preside over the official opening ceremony of the Musée du Vin et du Négoce on October 27, 2009 The world’s largest wine region, Bordeaux in France, opens its new long-awaited museum - Museum of Wine and Wine Trade. Bordeaux has a two-thousand year history of viticulture and has over 296,000 acres of vineyards in and around the town. Its new museum is found in the historical quarter Chartrons which has traditionally been the favoured location of wine merchants and traders. The new museum is housed in an 18th century manor-house with the original caves or cellars that would have been used to store the barrels of wine during the aging process in centuries past. A collection of artefacts that were used in the early cultivation of grapes and wine production will also be on display. Visitors will also receive, if desired, a tasting and guidance session with two different local Bordelais wines although the entry price is cheaper with a no-tasting option. Opening hours are Monday to Sunday 10am – 6pm. Admisson is 7 euros for adults or 5 euros without the wine-tasting. Tickets for the museum are available on-line and the museum web site also has a shop where you can buy wine and gifts for wine-lovers to be delivered to your door. World Famous Wine Shop L'IntendantWhile in the area of Bordeaux as visit to the world-famous wine seller L’Intendant is surely a must. It has been called one of the most beautiful wine shops in France and is situated across from the 17th century Grand Theatre. The shop stocks around 57 different regional appellation wines which vary in price from $7 to $10,000. But it the shops layout which is incredible, an enormous spiral staircase that spans all four floors is the showpiece and the wines, of which there are some 15,000 bottles, are displayed on the walls around the staircase. From everyday table wine to vintage wines it shouldn’t be possible not to find the exact wine you’re looking for here, and even if you don't want to buy any wine it's sure worth a visit.
