Prize-winning Competition for Wine Lovers - Experts and Wine-Lovers

If you fancy your chances along with the experts, then this competition could be for you. Find yourself a partner who knows their wine, and you could join in too.

The first Vila Viniteca pairs wine tasting competition took place last month on 9th March in La Llotja de Mar, Barcelona. The first blind wine- tasting competition was a huge success and the winning couple walked away with 12,000 Euros.

Organisers were more than pleased with the results, 84 pairs from 20 different Spanish provinces took part as well as entries from Italy, Denmark, Holland and Russia filled Llotja de Mar in Barcelona.

They tasted 7 wines: 2 whites, 3 reds y 2 specail wines, both in the classification phase and in the Grand Final. They uncorked 160 bottles of wine and 1300 glasses were used in the tasting process.

The wines they tasted were:

Classification phase:

  • Didier Dagueneau Silex 2005 – Pouilly-Fumé – Francia.Lusco Alba
  • Lusco Albariño 2006 – Rías Baixas – España.
  • Krug Grande Cuvée Brut– Champagne – Francia.
  • Ornellaia 2004 – Toscana – Italia.
  • Alión 2003– Ribera del Duero – España.
  • Lo Givot 2004– Priorat – España.
  • Kracher Eiswein cuvée 2006 – Burgenland – Austria.

Final phase:

  • François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot 2003 – Borgoña – Chablis
  • Francia.
  • Ridge Monte Bello Chardonnay 2004 – Santa Cruz Mountains – California
  • Recaredo Brut de Brut 2001 – Cava – España.
  • Artadi Viña El Pisón 2004 – Rioja – España.
  • Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2005 – Rhône – Francia.
  • Penfolds Grange 2001– South Australia – Australia.
  • Barbadillo Amontillado VORS – Jerez y Manzanilla – Sanlúcar de Barrameda – España.

The judges for the competition were Jose Peñin(Newspaper reporter and editor of specialised guides and magazines especializadas), Fernando Gurucharri(President of the Unión Española de Catadores), Juan Muñoz(President of the Unión de Asociaciones Españolas de Sumilleres), Dirk Van Der Niepoort(Director of Bodega Nieeport Vinhos and world-wide ambassador for the wines from Oporto and Portugal) and Juan Manuel Bellver(editor of the supplement Metrópoli for the newspaper Diario El Mundo).

The winners of the 1st Prize of the Vila Viniteca Pairs Wine Tasting were Rafel Sabadí, wine waiter and restaurant section manager at the Restaurant Roser 2 de l’Escala (Girona) and David Martínez, wine waiter and restaurant section manage at the Restaurant El Velero de Sitges (Barcelona).

They received 12.000€ 1st prize, a hand-painted decanter Riedel by the artist Francesc Artigau, a trip to the Riedel factory in Austria and a weekend in Piamonte to visit the wine cellars Ceretto and enjoy dinner in the Restaurant Piazza Duomo de Alba which has a Michelin 1* rating.

The second prize winners walked away with 4,000 Euros and the third place winners took home 2,000 Euros.

The next edition will take place in Madrid 2009 the date is still to be set, the only requisites for entering the competition is to be over 18! Entry fee is 100 Euros and subscription may be done via theVila Viniteca site, but nearer the event!
