To sample some of the best jamon in Spain you need to climb to its highest village - the views and the jamon make it more than worth your while.

Trevélez has been a settlement for over a thousand years, and it’s not only famous for its altitude - it’s over 2,000 metres above sea level, but it’s also considered to be the jamon capital of Spain.

It’s not only the altitude that takes your breath away, with stunning views around the Alpujarras and to the snowy peaks of the Sierra Nevada, you may need to sit and rest as your senses reel with it’s beauty.

This is one town which is easy to visit in Summer, as cool winds from the Sierra Nevada (Mountains covered in snow) mix with the gentle Mediterranean breezes to dispel what can be the oppresive heat of the summer months.

On June 13th you can see the whole town celebrating Dia de San Antonio, a day of festivities that serve as a reminder of the battles between the Moors and Christians when processions and parties take over the streets for a day.

August 5th is also party time with a pilgrimage which starts at the Ermita de San Antonio and sees pilgrims from the city of Granada joining the walk or ride to the peak of Mulhacen and the chapel that houses the image of la Virgin de las Nieves Virgen of the Snows.

If you don’t want to take part in the procession but would like to see the spectical, tak yourself along for a beer at the Hotel La Fragua, which is next to the starting point of the festivites.

The hotel also offers local jamon de Trevelez, a world-famous jamon, dried by natural methods, which for lovers of jamon is of 5-star quality, as they say in Trevelez lo mejor, which is quite simply - the best.

Trevelez was known in the neolithic period, rediscovered by the Romans but it was the Moors that left us the town and legacy we see today. Its name with a Latin foundation means between valleys.

To enjoy the location and the town a visit during one of the many fiestas is a must, the whole town participates in each event.
